Sydney Steward spent the summer with us at Encorus as a Process Engineer Intern. Sydney contributed to two large projects during her time here. The main projects she worked on was a Retrofit Design Upgrade and Tris Production System P&IDs. Sydney has background knowledge in heat and mass transfer, and she used this to create general templates for the process engineering team to use while working on projects. Some of the skills Sydney has learned during her time here include how to size pressure safety valves for various relief scenarios and how to create piping and instrumentation diagrams for different processes. Sydney also learned how to backcheck models. She says that figuring out where to reroute pipe lines and valves for both functionality and accessibility in a plant was something that helped her think more like an engineer.
Sydney believes that her experience at Encorus was enhanced by working with both Ross Trainor and Chris Martin in the Process Engineering Group. She says that they were both very easy to work with and is grateful they took the time to help her understand new concepts. Encorus Group Process Lead Ross Trainor, had this to say about Sydney’s time with Encorus;
“Sydney did a great job with her internship this summer and she will be coming back during the semester break to continue some work with us. She started off creating calculation templates such as Pressure Safety Valve (PSV) Sizing Calculation that she was able to use later in her internship.”
Sydney will be going back to the University at Buffalo this fall to finish her last year of school, before anticipating her graduation in May of 2023 with her bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering. She will also be training to run in her first half marathon this May in the Buffalo Marathon.
