Cast Iron Survey

Project Objective

The client required a steam distribution system survey to document the locations and type of any cast iron/malleable iron fittings and components as per the VHA Operational Alert and Guidance Document. Following identification, a risk assessment and interim safety measures pending replacement was created. A review of the system startup and shutdown procedure was also performed to mitigate the risks associated with water hammer on the system.

Encorus Group Solution

Encorus Group’s Mechanical Integrity inspector performed a full walkdown of all high pressure and medium pressure steam distribution piping throughout the medical center in accordance with the scope. All potential cast iron components were cataloged in a database and cross-referenced with identification markers on drawings. Positive material identification testing was performed on a select group of components with information replicated amongst identical components. Drawings, databases, and an affected component summary were included in the final deliverables, as well as a start-up/shutdown plan.
