Syracuse Hancock International Airport North Concourse and FIS Renovation–South Concourse Expansion and Enhancements

Project Objective

This project included plumbing and fire protection design services to support additions and renovations to the Syracuse Hancock International Airport. The overall project included 3 concourse additions, or “bump-outs” (2 on the North Concourse, 1 on the South Concourse). It also included two newly renovated spaces within the airport. These included the new Federal Inspection Services (FIS) and the Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) areas.

Unique Project Features

The new additions on both concourses placed building features within 100 ft of potential fuel spill points. Due to this, the glazing installed within the additions would require exposure protection from potential fuel fires. This would include the design and installation of window sprinklers and a deluge valve that would wet the windows in the event of a fuel spill and fire, provided protection to the occupants within the building.

Encorus Group Solution

Serving as a subconsultant to Corgan, Encorus performed site visits and field investigation to document existing systems and identify potential tie points for plumbing and fire protection system modifications.

The design included modifications to the interior wet pipe sprinklers systems to support the architects building renovation design. It also included the window sprinklers and design for exposure protection on the new additions, along with modifications to a dry-pipe sprinkler system to protect and exterior, unheated, covered baggage conveyor.

For plumbing design, Encorus provided roof drain and piping design for the new additions. Encorus also provided design for new domestic cold and hot water supply to support the FIS and CBP renovations, along with the sanitary drainage required.
