Crane Library Revitalization

By April 1, 2026No Comments3 min read

Renovating historic buildings comes with a unique set of challenges, especially when environmental hazards are involved. The Crane Library project in Buffalo, New York, is a strong example of how careful planning, coordination, and technical expertise can ensure both preservation and safety throughout a multi-phase renovation.

Project Overview

For this project, our team partnered with Architectural Resources on behalf of the City of Buffalo’s Department of Public Works, Parks, and Streets. The work was divided into two phases, each requiring detailed environmental assessments and ongoing collaboration with multiple stakeholders.

Identifying Environmental Hazards

Before any renovation work could begin, a comprehensive inspection was conducted to identify hazardous building materials. This included assessments for asbestos, lead-based paint, and PCB-containing caulk.

During the inspection, several key materials were identified, including:

  • Flooring materials containing asbestos
  • Pipe insulation
  • Window caulking and glazing compounds
  • A Zonolite sub-slab insulation layer

Understanding the location and condition of these materials was critical to developing a safe and compliant renovation plan.

Thoughtful Abatement Design

With hazards identified, the next step involved designing effective abatement strategies for both Phase I and Phase II. This process required close coordination with all trades involved in the project to ensure that every scope item was captured and addressed.

By aligning abatement plans with the overall construction schedule, the team helped minimize disruptions while maintaining strict regulatory compliance.

Onsite Monitoring and Adaptability

During construction, project and air monitoring played a vital role in maintaining safety standards. Continuous oversight ensured that abatement activities met all clearance requirements and that air quality remained within acceptable limits.

Like many renovation projects, especially in older buildings, unexpected conditions arose on-site. Whether it involved newly discovered materials or the need to adjust sampling strategies, the team worked closely with the client and contractors to respond quickly and effectively.

Delivering Safe, Successful Outcomes

The Crane Library Phase I & II project highlights the importance of proactive environmental management in renovation work. Through detailed inspections, coordinated abatement design, and responsive onsite monitoring, the project team successfully navigated complex challenges while supporting the safe transformation of a historic community asset.
