The purpose of this project was to extend the NFTA-Metro light rail line by 6.5 miles. The previous rail line, which was completed in 1986, ran approximately 6.4 miles along Main Street in Buffalo, from the KeyBank Center to the south campus of the University of Buffalo. The extension is to include a mix of underground and above-ground segments, and approximately ten new stations.
The project includes multiple interested parties and environmental permitting. The location of new stations was imperative to final route decision. As a subconsultant to WSP, Encorus provided environmental analysis including NEPA and SEQRA, conceptual engineering design to support the Environmental Impact Statement, field and utility surveys, development of schematic plans; utility locations; evaluation of possible utility relocation scenarios, development of conceptual construction schedules, and preparation of cost estimates.
Encorus prepared cross sections of existing roadways in order to facilitate the placement of stations along the proposed corridor. This involved field investigations to determine cross sections sizes and materials. Cross sections were submitted for review to determine proper locations for stations and light rail routing.
Construction for this project is expected to commence in 2026 and will be completed by 2030.
