Join us in welcoming Zackary “Zack” Martin as he begins his role as Associate Mechanical Engineer. He is an Alfred State alum with three years of experience as a Manufacturing Engineer. We are excited to have him join the team.
We asked Zack a couple of questions to get to know him better.
What led you to Encorus?
When I was working at Sopark Corporation, I was happy, but I really felt like I was not living up to my full potential. While I was at Sopark, I was a Manufacturing Engineer. I definitely made a difference there, but it truly was not what I went to school and what my degree was. I went to school to be a Mechanical Engineer. So, when I saw the listing for Indeed for Encorus in Springville, I was very interested for many reasons. Along with it being a position that I went to school for it was a company that I knew about growing up in Springville and dreamed of working at a place so close to where I live. Finally, I was interested due to it also being close to all the activities that I volunteer and attend. Since I am so close to Springville during that day, I can help out more with my role being on the board of directors for the Springville Center for the Arts. Also, now with a shorter commute, I am able to attend events in the afternoon. So, in conclusion, I would say that the things that led me to Encorus was being able to closer to the Springville community and being able to work on projects that I went to college for.
What are you most excited about as you start in your new position?
One of the most exciting things I am looking forward to here at Encorus is being able to work on projects and actually seeing the results in real life. For example, going out to a job site and seeing the starting product and then coming back and designing it here and then being able to hopefully go see the finished product and knowing that you helped design this and truly left your mark with the project and the community that you designed it for.
When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up?
When I was younger, I always dreamed of becoming an Imagineer. An Imagineer was an Engineer that worked at Disney and would design all of the rides and attractions there. So, when I went down to Florida for my Disney College Program, I applied to be one. But due to Covid, they were not accepting anyone.
What’s your favorite way to spend a day off?
My favorite way to spend a day off is to hang out in my backyard. I worked with my dad to make our backyard a tropical paradise. I like to enjoy it by relaxing in the sun and hanging out in our tiki bar shed that my dad and I helped design and build. Then I like to cook something out on the grill or put something in the smoker. Then just sitting around and listening to Jimmy Buffett and hanging out with family and friends.
Do you have any pets?
I have two cats at home. One is a Maine Coon cat named Don Julio, and the other is a tabby cat named Sagamore.
What is one thing you want people to know about you?
The one thing I would want people to know about me is that I am a very nice and very approachable, so if you have any questions or need to talk to me, please don’t hesitate.
What is your favorite book or movie?
I would say my favorite movie is a tie between Rocky IV and Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.
What was your favorite thing to do as a kid?
My favorite thing to do as a kid was to build and play with my Legos.
Who was your favorite teacher in high school, and why?
My favorite teacher in high school would had to have been Mr. Janish. He was my algebra teacher. He was a retired veteran who always had crazy stories and always made learning about algebra fun. If I had a teacher like him for all four years of high school, then I would have been a math wizard by the time I graduated.
If you could invite anyone who has ever existed to a dinner party, who would you invite?
I would definitely want to invite Jimmy Buffett to a dinner and hear about all the stories he could tell and ask him where he got the ideas for some of his songs.
If you had to choose one food to take to a deserted island, what would it be?
If I had to choose one food, I would bring potatoes. The reason is that you can prepare potatoes in so many different ways (salted, baked, mash, scalloped etc.) that you would not get sick of them right away.
