Thermographic testing refers to the non-destructive examination of parts, materials, or systems using the imaging of the temperature fields at an object’s surface. This testing method was adopted by the American Society for Nondestructive Testing as a standard testing method in 1992.
Thermal imaging uses an infrared camera to detect thermal waves which are invisible to the naked eye. This can aid in predictive maintenance by using the data to determine temperature fluctuations and identify potential maintenance issues which may cause equipment failure or shutdown.
Thermographic testing can also utilize infrared video to create images called thermograms, which show surface heat variations. This technology has numerous applications. For example, thermograms of electrical systems can detect unusually hot electrical connections or components, and thermograms of mechanical systems can show heat created by extreme friction. Thermography can also be used to help detect heat loss and air leakage in building envelopes.
Encorus Group has utilized thermographic testing on a number of projects and has found it to be useful in the assessments of roofs slated for replacement and electrical equipment. Using drones and infrared scanning, specific locations showing excess heat loss can be easily identified, ultimately saving the client time and money by allowing the design team to focus on those areas which need more attention.
