In 1961, the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) was established with the intention of creating a recognized certification for engineering technicians and technologists. Following a merger of two certification bodies in the early 1980’s, NICET became a not for profit division of the National Society for Professional Engineers (NSPE).
The Significance of NICET Certification
NICET certification is divided into two main categories: Certified Engineering Technician and Certified Engineering Technologist. Technician certification requires documentation of work history and specific experience, recommendations from supervisors or mentors, and successful completion of testing. Technologist certification does not require testing, but instead a four-year engineering technology degree and documentation of work history and endorsements demonstrating adequate skill.
Advantages for Professionals
Technician certifications can be obtained in several practice areas, including civil engineering technology, such as construction materials testing and transportation construction inspection, and electrical and mechanical systems engineering technology, which includes electrical power and fire protection system testing. Each certification also consists of up to four levels, which account for the amount and type of experience the technician possesses.
Benefits for Employers
Why is it important to have a NICET-certified technician or technologist as part of your project team? The value of these certifications lies in the fact that national standards are maintained, ensuring that everyone holding that standard has a certain level of experience and understanding, and is using the same criteria in the testing and inspection services they provide no matter the industry or geographic area they work in. Some jurisdictions and federal agencies require NICET-certified technicians for specific tasks. Once earned, certification must be maintained through continuing professional development and recertification on a regular basis, ensuring that technicians are continuously exposed to the latest standards and methodologies.
