What Does Encorus Test and Inspect on a Construction Site, and why?

The Importance of Construction Site Testing and Inspection

Testing and inspecting are essential activities at a construction site to ensure the safety, quality, and compliance of the construction project. These procedures involve various checks, evaluations, and measurements to verify that the construction work meets the required standards and specifications. While testing and inspections can seem cumbersome, they are extremely helpful tools to keep the construction process running smoothly and safely, and ensure that projects stay in line with budget and schedule goals. At Encorus Group, our civil testing technicians are trained in a variety of construction testing and inspection areas and techniques, including asphalt, concrete, structural steel, and welds.

Asphalt

Asphalt testing is a critical component of effective pavement design, construction, and maintenance. It is also key to predicting how asphalt materials will perform and respond to environmental conditions over time. By ensuring the quality and performance of asphalt materials, asphalt tests can help to minimize costs, optimize performance, and extend pavement life. Equipment used to test asphalt includes nuclear gauges, penetrometers, compactors, and load frames.

Concrete

Concrete is often required to bear and support heavy loads.  Before concrete can be placed, projects require that concrete cylinder specimens be tested in a laboratory to determine their compressive strength and ensure the necessary load-carrying capacity. However, concrete needs to do more than just be strong when it is installed – it must remain strong well into the future. Aside from compressive strength testing, other techniques such as ultrasonic testing and infrared thermography, as well as the use of ground penetrating radar and moisture meters are utilized to assess different aspects of the concrete.  Testing ensures that the product is consistent and meets the intended design parameters – that it will do what it’s supposed to. Failure to properly test concrete can lead to a number of issues, including reduced structural integrity, safety hazards, and citations or fines for non-compliance.

Structural Steel

Another important structural element that requires testing is structural steel. The steel used in a structure needs to be tested for strength and hardness to make sure that there aren’t any critical weak areas in the structure. By performing testing, engineers and builders can avoid costly repairs, evaluate the seismic vulnerability of the reinforcement, and verify that the construction elements comply with all codes. Non-destructive testing methods include magnetic particle testing, ultrasonic testing, and liquid penetrant testing. All three of these methods are utilized to detect flaws, and ultrasonic testing is also used for thickness measurement.

Welds

Welds are essential to structural reliability, providing critical strength and durability. It is crucial to check the welds for quality and ensure that fabrication is as safe and secure as possible. If welds aren’t properly inspected and tested, it can lead to weld failure, resulting in small to catastrophic consequences. These procedures include certified welding inspections, as well as visual, radiographic, ultrasonic, magnetic particle, and liquid penetrant inspections.

Construction testing and inspecting are vital components of the construction process. They play a crucial role in ensuring the project’s success by guaranteeing safety, quality, compliance, and adherence to design specifications, ultimately leading to a successful and durable end product.
