Jonathan Fabian, EIT has been with Encorus for 9 years, and is the firm’s Electrical Lead. Let’s get to know him a little better!
How did you get started in your career?
From a very young age, I have always been interested in how things work. My parents helped to encourage this curiosity and grow it. One of my favorite memories growing up was being able to visit my father’s workplace – he worked at the Dunkirk Power Plant as an engineer. Being able to see the large steam boilers, electrical generators, transformers, and other massive equipment was an amazing experience.
As I got older, my general interest in how things work focused more and more on electronics, computers, electrical systems, and biologic systems. Going into college, I originally pursued a focus in biomedical engineering, but after a number of co-ops at various companies, I eventually decided that my interests were more in the power and controls area.
What advice would you give someone hoping to enter your career field?
Figure out what drives you and don’t just pursue an engineering career for reasons such as money or prestige. An engineering education is a difficult and expensive endeavor that doesn’t end once you’re done with formal education. If you don’t enjoy the discipline you’re currently pursuing, you should consider re-focusing on something that you do enjoy.
What is one professional goal you have?
For this upcoming year, I plan to work with our Controls Engineering lead and safety department to improve our electrical safety program.
If you had three wishes, what would they be?
- For everyone to have some genuine empathy for others and be able to look beyond their own personal biases.
- More time to travel and explore places around the world.
- Three more wishes.
What is one thing on your bucket list?
One thing on my bucket list is to travel to Australia and New Zealand.
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?
My favorite way to spend a day off is heading to the slopes for some skiing.
